Bilateral Relations

Malawi and China

Malawi established diplomatic relations with People`s Republic of China on 28th December, 2007. In February, 2008, Malawi opened its diplomatic Mission in Beijing while the People’s Republic of China opened its Mission in Malawi on 26th January 2008. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the journey has been remarkable. Over the years, the two sides have maintained high-level exchanges and enhanced political mutual trust, and social-economic cooperation.

Malawi joined the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in 2009 and participated in the 8th FOCAC Ministerial Meeting which was held in Dakar, Senegal in November 2021. The two countries are currently implementing Dakar Action Plan 2022-2024 which has set the priorities for cooperation between China and Africa in nine programs. Malawi also signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of the Peoples Republic of China on the Cooperation Framework of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road known short as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) on the 5th of August, 2021. The nine programs agreed at the 8th FOCAC Ministerial Meeting and the signed BRI MOU are in tandem with the execution of the Malawi Vision 2063 which is the current policy for national development in Malawi.
